Sin has nothing on you

‘ Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality, Nor cheats (swindlers and thieves), nor greedy graspers, nor drunkards, nor foulmouthed revilers and slanderers, nor extortioners and robbers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God. And such some of you were [once]. But you were washed clean (purified by a complete atonement for sin and made free from the guilt of sin), and you were consecrated (set apart, hallowed), and you were justified [pronounced righteous, by trusting] in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the [Holy] Spirit of our God.’ 1 Corinthians 6:11 AMPC

In this portion of scripture, Paul writes to the church in Corinth. In verses nine to ten, he gives a detailed list of those with no inheritance in the Kingdom of God. Paul names them by the sins they have committed. There is no longer a distinction between who they are and what they have done. Maybe as you are reading this, you have since lost your birth name. Your habits or past actions have caused people to call you by a certain name. It could be one associated with your anger outbursts, your unfair business dealings, or any one of those listed by Paul. Well, this was me too once.

In Christ you are not identified by your past sin

This is what Jesus is saying to you; because you have been reconciled with God, and you are not identified by your sin. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law but under grace. This means sin shall not speak or exercise dominion even in naming you. When you made Jesus Lord over your life, you took up His identity and therefore your name changed. This is exactly what the Holy Spirit came to do; to expose the godless world’s view of sin.

The devil might have used your past against you, but here is the good news; he has no foothold anymore. It may take a while for the rest to catch up, but when you start walking in this revelation, you take your authority back! God says whoever obeys him He will give a new name. You have a new name because you became a new creature, born of God. Old things have passed away and you have become new!
